What is Insulin Resistance

In a healthy body, blood sugar is tightly regulated. A key player in this is insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas. Think of insulin as a signal that tells your cells to open up and let glucose in. When you eat and your blood sugar rises, the pancreas releases insulin so that glucose moves efficiently out of the bloodstream and into the cells that need it.

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body's cells stop responding properly to that signal. The insulin is still there, but the cells no longer react to it the way they should, so glucose has a harder time getting in. Liver, muscle and fat cells rely heavily on insulin to do their job, which is why insulin resistance affects these tissues the most. When their metabolism is disrupted, the effects ripple out across the whole body and can show up as a wide range of symptoms.

At first, the body compensates. Sensing that glucose isn't moving into cells as easily, the pancreas ramps up insulin production. For a while, this extra insulin is enough to keep things working and blood sugar stays in the normal range.

Over time, though, it takes more and more insulin to get the same result. Eventually the pancreas can struggle to keep up, and insulin production may decline. When the body can no longer hold blood sugar at a normal level, a person may be diagnosed as pre-diabetic. If the process continues, it can progress to type 2 diabetes.

This shift can take years, even decades. That's the encouraging part: when insulin resistance is caught early, there is often a real opportunity to slow it down or turn it around before it develops into diabetes. Insulin resistance has also been linked to other serious conditions, including cardiovascular disease, certain cancers, and metabolic syndrome.

Some signs suggest a higher risk. If you have high blood pressure, high triglycerides, or carry excess weight โ€” particularly around the belly โ€” your risk of insulin resistance is greater. These often cluster together as part of what's known as metabolic syndrome.

The earlier things are addressed, the better the chances of avoiding the more serious consequences down the line.

Insulin resistance is also very common among women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Managing PCOS often means paying close attention to the lifestyle factors that influence insulin resistance โ€” and small, sustainable changes can make a meaningful difference.
